Can You Shower After Laser Hair Removal?

Can You Shower After Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is an increasingly popular and effective method for hair removal on various parts of the body. The rise in popularity means an influx of questions and misconceptions about the treatment.

One of these common questions I get asked by clients is “can I shower after laser hair removal?”

It is generally recommended to wait at least 24 hours before showering after laser hair removal. This is because your skin will be sensitive to heat for a period of up to 48 hours after the treatment. People who tend to have more sensitive skin should wait the entire 48 hours before showering after laser hair removal.

The time you need to wait can also be impacted by the type of laser being used for the treatment, as well as the sensitivity of your skin. No two people are alike, meaning that it’s very important to follow the post-treatment instructions provided to you by your laser technician! The recommendations they give you will take into consideration the laser they use and your unique needs based on pre-treatment consultation.

Can You Take A Cold Shower After Laser Hair Removal?

It is recommended to wait 24 hours before showering after laser hair removal to allow your skin to heal. However, if you must shower before this time, wait at least 8 hours and take a cold shower to minimize irritation or other skin reactions.

When you take a hot shower, the blood flow to the surface of your skin increases, this can cause swelling and irritation to the treatment area, which can impact the effectiveness of your laser hair removal.

Cold showers have the opposite effect and divert blood flow away from the surface of your skin. So if you must shower, it is advised to keep your showers post-treatment to cooler temperatures to help your skin heal properly and get the most out of the treatments!

While showering, avoid the use of fragranced products or abrasive scrubs on the treatment area. An unscented body wash is your best option. Also, be gentle when cleansing your skin! Meaning no loofahs, sponges, exfoliating mitts, etc.

What About A Bath After Laser Hair Removal?

The answer to this question is the same as the shower! Avoid warm baths for at least 24-48 hours after laser hair removal.

If you’re like me and absolutely cannot take a cold bath or shower under any circumstances, then wait the entire two days before drawing that nice warm bath!

Final Thoughts

To sum it up, whether you should shower after laser hair removal or not (and how long you need to wait) depends on a few factors. Mainly, the type of laser that was used, your skin type and sensitivity, and the area being treated.

The rule of thumb is to just avoid showers and baths for a minimum of 24 hours after treatment.

Your laser technician will definitely give you specific information that’s unique to you in their post-treatment instructions, make sure to follow them!

Proper post-treatment care is essential to getting the most out of your laser hair removal treatments and minimizing the risk of side effects.
