As you age, the outer layer of your skin (epidermis) thins, even though the number of cell layers remains unchanged. The number of pigment-containing cells decreases. Aging skin typically looks thinner, paler, and more translucent.

Symptoms of Aging Skin

As your skin ages, there will inevitably be changes you start to notice, these may include:

  • Dark spots (Hyperpigmentation) or sun spots
  • Skin becomes slack and hangs looser, which happens from the loss of elasticity tissues in the skin
  • Wrinkles and fine lines, forehead, crows feet, smile lines
  • Small bumps or growths on the skin’s surface, along with unwanted hair

Causes of Aging Skin

Changes in connective tissue reduce the skin’s strength and elasticity. The blood vessels under the skin become more fragile as you lose some of the protective fat layer. This then leads to bruising, bleeding under the skin, and cherry angiomas. You gradually produce less oil beginning after menopause, which can make it harder to keep the skin hydrated which results in dryness and itchiness.

Sun exposure is the primary reason above all for premature aging, we can’t emphasize enough how important it is to apply SPF every day! While sun exposure is the main culprit, there are other factors that cause aging skin as well, such as makeup, nutrition, pollution, and Lack of skin care prevention throughout your younger years. Wear SPF!!
