How Many Sessions Do You Usually Need For Laser Hair Removal?

Traditional hair removal methods can be a hassle for many people. The constant need to shave every morning, purchase new razors, blades, and shaving creams, can all add up in time and money! Then you have other hair removal methods like waxing which can be very painful!

So it’s no surprise that laser hair removal is increasing in popularity due to its long-lasting results, affordability, and pain-free treatments!

With the rise in popularity of this treatment, clients always ask “how many sessions do you usually need for laser hair removal?”

I figured this would be a great question to answer in this article, so let’s get right to it!

How Many Sessions Do You Need For Laser Hair Removal?

A rule of thumb is that laser hair removal clients will need around six to nine sessions to get rid of hair completely.

However, every client’s body is unique and there isn’t a one size fits all answer to the question. Some clients may see permanent results after 4 sessions, while others may need more than 6 sessions, up to a total of 8 or 9.

Regardless of the total number of sessions you end up needing, every patient can expect around a 10% to 25% reduction in hair after their first treatment.

Some of the biological factors that will affect the number of sessions you need include:

Skin Tone

Lighter skin tones require fewer sessions to treat than darker skin tones due to a higher contrast between the hair and skin. This makes it easier for the laser to target and destroy more hair follicles per treatment.

The Coarseness of Your Hair

If you have coarse hair on the area being treated – meaning hair strands that are thicker and larger in diameter – more sessions may be needed for optimal results.

Your Hair’s Growth Cycle

Your hair grows in cycles, and laser hair removal is most effective when your hair is in the active growth phase (aka the “anagen phase”).

The more your treatment aligns with the growth stage, the easier and more effective each treatment will be.

Consequently, since not all hairs will be in this phase at the same time, multiple treatments are required.

Area of Your Body Being Treated

Various areas of your face like your chin and neck are likely to require more treatments than other parts of your body.

According to Healthline, this is caused by a few things:

  1. Hormonal fluctuations
  2. Reactivation of hair follicles by androgens like DHEA and testosterone

So depending on the treatment area, more treatments or touch-ups may be required.

How Long Should I Wait Between Laser Hair Removal Treatments?

For most patients, four to eight weeks is the optimal time to wait between laser hair removal sessions. But like the number of sessions you will need, this can vary from patient to patient.

The time you need to wait is impacted by the biological factors listed above like your hair’s growth cycle and treatment area. Certain parts of your body will grow hair faster, while other parts will grow slower.

Does Laser Hair Removal Last Permanently?

The short answer is, it depends! For some people, laser hair removal will provide permanent or semi-permanent results.

For others, after the entire treatment cycle of laser hair removal, If hair does grow back, you will notice that it is far thinner and less noticeable than it was prior to starting treatment.

Of course, the success and length of results can also be impacted by things like the skill & experience of the technician, the type of laser being used, and the biological makeup of your body.

At Luminate Derm Spa, we use the DermaLase IPL for all hair removal treatments. Intense Pulse Light (IPL) removes all moisture from the hair follicle, causing it to burn and die. This has been very successful for our clients, and most of them experience between an 80% to 90% reduction in hair overall.

After the entire cycle of laser hair removal treatments is complete, yearly touch-ups may be recommended to achieve “permanent” results. But again, the need for touch-ups and the success of treatments will be determined based on every client’s unique body!
